A New Obsession with the Old

I was fourteen when Buffy the Vampire Slayer started on TV.  I wasn't really interested, so I didn't watch it.
But now that I'm older and insane, I discovered that Netflix made the whole series available to watch instantly, so guess what I've been doing? (And if you have an iPhone, download the new Netflix app that lets you watch instantly anywhere :)

I've barreled through 2.5 seasons of Buffy over the past couple of weeks, and it's making me a bit wacky... my mind is filled with monsters and vamps (and Angel... swoon).  Even when I pump gas or walk in a parking lot, I've got my eye out for, well, whatever.  I feel a really strong desire to learn martial arts now, too.  My Netflix queue is lined up with instructional DVDs.  haha.

There's something about getting wrapped up in a show (or a good book) that inspires me to write.  Do you find that happening to you?  I suppose a near constant immersion in a heightened reality would tend to do that to any creative mind.

Happy Thursday :)

  3. Summer - What a nice dad!

Aspiring X - Firefly is lined up in my Netflix queue, and I haven't heard of Serenity, but I'll look into it! I'm LOVING Buffy so far. I just watched the Christmas episode of season 3 where it snowed and it was Angel's sign that he was brought back for a reason. Sigh.

  5. I did this with 24 a few years back. My mother and I started watching the 4th season on TV, and when it was over, we rented them all from Blockbuster and had 24 marathons. lol

  8. I'm doing this right now with Veronica Mars, and a couple years ago I did this with Alias. I love finding shows that are so engrossing that I get lost in them for days at a time (thanks to netflix!)

  9. Yes--definitely watch Firefly FIRST.

I'm watching Veronica Mars right now too on Netflix. My hubby and I are huge TV-bingers. We don't watch anything sedately. But the last one that was really monumental was LOST: we watched all 6 seasons in about 4 weeks. I'm talking 12-13 episodes on a Sunday. :) We're hardcore like that!

We watched season 4 of Dexter over Friday and Saturday last week...

And Supernatural! We binged all of those in about 2 months, too.

I'm looking forward to tackling Buffy after VM.

  10. Oh fun. Yes, I've discovered "the Netflix". I end up watching a whole series of old shows that I missed back when they originally aired. It's fun.

  11. Lynn and Summer - I just added Veronica Mars a couple of days ago! That's definitely soon on the list! (And I watched about 10+ episodes of Buffy in one day and into the night a few days ago.... so I totally get it. lol)

Holly - Netflix is like, the best idea ever.

  12. I definitely understand - I never watched Dawson's Creek when it was on but I just started watching them all online! And yes, it definitely makes me want to write. Especially because I write YA and the show is so immersed in what it means to be a high schooler and a teenager. I agree that heightened realities get the creative mind working.

  13. I watched the last couple of episodes and I really liked them. I'd completely forgotten about that until this post. I'm going to have to go check them out now :)

  14. Absolutely! I think letting yourself get wrapped up in something well made gets those creative juices flowing and inspires you to make something equally well made. I tend to go to musicals when I need some inspiration. Or Leonardo DiCaprio. O:o)

  15. I do this all the time too!!!! I *heart* Buffy and Veronica Mars. Own all the seasons of both. I feel like they will forever be my BFF's. How weird is that?

Keep up the watching and the inspiration!!! You have some of the best ever episodes still to go! ;-)

  16. Great books and movies always inspire me to write! Whenever I fall in love with the characters, it makes me want to write books with such compelling characters who have touching stories.
