Why I Shouldn't Be Adding Books to my TBR Pile...

So, yesterday I had y'all help me figure out which books I should order with my mad money Amazon gift card.  It seems Matched was mentioned by nearly everyone, so I think if I don't win it in a blog contest I entered over at Novels During Naptime (yes by mentioning it I am decreasing my chances, but if you aren't following Karen, you should be), Matched will definitely be on my list.  As for picking the other two... gosh.  So. Hard.  Across the Universe will probably make it (Again, assuming I don't win it in a contest), and I'm torn between Anna and the French Kiss, Firelight, and The Iron King (Actually I'm torn between more than that and the longer I wait the more my list will change (hello... Desires of the Dead??)

Here is a quick grainy photo I snapped of my bookshelf this morning:

My insanely handy husband (maybe I should be calling him Handy??? :) built this for me a couple years back (I think he could sell them...), and it's still unfinished. I cannot decide what color to paint it!!! I tested out some reds and they all looked hideous, tried chocolate brown but the books would get lost on such a dark color. So there it sits. Just plain wood.

Anyway, there are quite a few holes you see on my shelf because of the reorganizing I did for the sake of this picture, which I'm thinking should stay to inspire me.  Let me draw your attention to the large section mid right:

Blogging friends, I give you my TBR pile.  Now... this collection has been building for several years, some of them bought back when I had a steady paying job and I frequently took my lunch breaks at Borders (hey, they sent me the coupons... and now that they are facing bankruptcy, I sort of blame my old company for laying me off and keeping me from spending money there), some of them (7) I won in blog contests (it really does pay to enter them {ok, I see Twenty Boy Summer made it in that stack... that was an accident. I've already read it, but I won a copy last week along with 4 others and apparently didn't take it out of the stack}), some of them are loaners (those three books with the glare are The Vampire Diaries books my friend is letting me borrow--she read them when she was a teen so they are beat up and smell nice and old the way I like my books!), many of them were bought with gift cards I got for birthdays and Christmases. . . (can you tell I'm making excuses--trying to make it sound like I did not spend $300 on all of these hahaha).

No matter how I ended up with them, the point is, I have them, and I haven't read them... and there are a lot more of them than I thought.  So... no more book buying after my Amazon certificate unless I'm going to meet an author (hello Rachel Hawkins (of Hex Hall fame) on March 4th!) until I make a SERIOUS dent in this pile!!!!

Anyone else have a ridiculously large TBR pile haunting them??

  1. That book shelf is amazing! If I had the room, I would totally have one. Because I still live at home *coughs*I'llmoveoutoneday*cough* so I doubt my parents will let me take up the living room with all my books.

My TBR shelf was getting pretty big (though not as big as yours!) but I made quite a dent in it over Xmas.

  2. Wow. I was about to ask where you bought the bookshelf because right now all of my books are upstairs in the loft area just hanging out. Doesn't make me happy but I haven't had time (and money disappears for more books) so the bookshelves have never gotten added (yet).

I don't have as many as you but I started my book collecting this year. I have just under 100 books and I have read most of them. However, like you, I can't help but fall in love with many other books.

I just finished Anna and the French Kiss and it was AMAZING!!! But Firelight is to die for as well. Maybe you'll just have to wait to buy Firelight when Vanish comes out and Sophie Jordan is back at Blue Willow (just a thought). :)

  3. Your TBR pile looks a lot like mine! I see 13 Little Blue Envelopes in there. Loved that book!

Also, I highly recommend Anna and the French Kiss. It is SO GOOD.

  4. I wish I had that TBR pile! It looks awesome. I read through mine by putting off my responsibilities. Not good for the laundry or dishes, but so fun for me.

  5. I have a huge TBR shelf as well. It's always fluctuating, but I just can't give up on a good book. Sometimes, there's a book I've heard so much about, but in my hands, it doesn't take. So I put it on the shelf. And sometimes--years later--I read it and love it.
    PS Read Kite Runner.

  6. Love the bookshelf. I'm just as bad with the TBR list. I've got over 30 books sitting at home that I have to get around to read.

  7. I like your bookshelf, I need one like that but in white :)

  8. You have the same blend as my TBR pile - a lot of MG and romance too. I have 12 books on my TBR pile. I stayed up to a silly time... until I finished The Time Traveller's Wife - I know which defective gene I wish I possess right-about-now: that was a good/bad decision.
I'm starting Percy Jackson Lightning Thief tonight.

  9. I also have a huge TBR pile, although that's mixed in with books that I have read, so it isn't transparent and thus makes me feel less guilty. Still, I can't stop buying books.

  11. I have a "to read" list that has over 500 items on it. Top that. ;o)

I see several in your TBR pile that I've read! Yea for similar interests.

  12. I don't think you could go wrong with any of those choices for your Amazon purchase, but personally, of the last three options, I'd probably throw in Anna and the French Kiss. It's fun, and it's so different from Matched and AtU, a nice change. But man, you already have such a large TBR pile! Good luck!

That bookshelf is gorgeous, by the way. The plain wood looks nice, too, even if you don't paint it.

  13. LOL you don't even want to know the size of my TBR pile. It is like... bookcases big.

I have 2 daughters, ages 8 and 3, and between the two of them, they have 10 ENTIRE BOOKCASES. JUST OF THEIR BOOKS. They each have two in their room and we have a 6-bookcase library in our playroom. And they're all full.

I have three floor-to-ceiling bookcases of my own. And not all my books fit.

At least they're in bookshelves, right? Yeah. I think I have a problem.

  14. Wow Lindsey.... just... wow. That's a LOT of bookcases!!

    E. Elle - I have around 200 on my list... thankful it's not 500!!!

  15. That right there is a really big TBR list. Mine is about half the size... which is still pretty ridiculous, but a bit more manageable.

  16. I'm too poor to buy books at the moment, so my TBR pile consists of a long list of books on hold at the library. Matched is on my list, too.

  17. I say throw some antique finish Brie wax on that shelf and call it a day. (Nice work Handy.) I think it is smart for you to ask your blogger buddies what books to buy. I've added your top selection to my "to be checked out and see if i want to buy" list. Nice book collection. I look at a bookshelf as a trophy case. Accomplishments the average folk don't do.

  18. Hi, Eva!!

Kaylie - the library is awesome! and I love that they let you request online... makes life so much easier!

Dana - i'll have to look into this wax of which you speak! And I like how you look at a bookshelf as a trophy case... very cool thought. Although, I might only see mine that way once my book gets published and is up there with the rest of them! :)

  19. The bookshelf looks great. Yes, I have a bad habit of buying books, which pile up, and, oh yeah, look like what you have there. Argh. I need more time. :)

  20. I have a list that's haunting me, for sure! but I know the feeling, I think I took home more books to read over winter break than I did presents for my family and friends :) Oh, and I am waaaaay jealous of that awesome bookshelf :)

  21. I love looking at book pics....

I gave up on shelves and I have books stored in crates. Then I have two big stacks on my desk of books I want to read sooner than later.

Then I have over a hundred recent (purchased within the past year) ebooks waiting to be read and hundreds of free classic ebooks in another device. Pretty overwhelming.

  22. YOU HAVEN'T READ THE LIGHTNING THIEF YET?! Stop reading everything else and go read that one!!! Seriously. It's the best middle grade book I've ever read. Period. (Whew...all that excitement drained me a little bit. lol) Seriously, though, my TBR pile is huge...and growing. It's kinda embarrassing, really. lol

But if you're still debating which book you should go buy, I would def recommend THE IRON KING. That's a great series!!! :)

  23. I did that once to my hubby. He builds me stuff and then I take forever deciding what color to make it.
