I sat down to write, but then...

I got distracted. Does this happen to anyone else? I don't know what's wrong with me. I'm at a good place in my WIP... I actually feel like I know where I'm going with this chapter. Why can't I just do it?!

Instead, I started looking for agents to query. Hello. I'm only on chapter ten. LONG ways from the query. Nevertheless, I got up, flipped through a handful of my favorite books, and took down agent names. I figure, if I've heard of the book enough to buy it, the agent must have a pretty darn good idea how to get books into the right hands. Good place to start... eventually. I'm stopping myself there, with my handwritten list of agents to research LATER when I'm READY.

I don't even have a TITLE. Let me tell you how much time I spent trying to come up with one of THOSE. I usually have the title so early on in my writing process (it's often one of the first things about the story I know), so I'm very miffed about this one. I'm letting it bother me to the point that coming up with a title is keeping me from writing the actual story, and NON MI PIACE (peeah-chay, in case you looked at that and went, huh?! It means, I DON'T LIKE IT!).

What kinds of things distract you? Anyone else cruising along on their stories but have yet to be inspired with a title? Any ideas how to come up with one?? :)

  1. That's pretty much the story of my writing LIFE. I know exactly what the next 2-ish scenes of my WIP are, but I just can't quite bring myself to write. (And I am also stumped on a title.) I think it has to do with it being PERFECT in my head and...not...when it comes out on the page.

  2. Sometimes it's okay to get a little distracted, the issue is not to stay distracted. I sometimes find creativity sparks when I don't force it. But you can try and spark some creativity by reading success stories of authors. That always gets me going, cause I want to be there, but it won't happen if you don't write it.

I have written stories completely, without a title. And at the very end, chose one I never expected. On occasion I have changed the titled to a new one because the plot or themed changed and a fresh title was necessary. I think you needed a break, you took one, now back to nitty gritty of writing. Have fun and best of luck Kristin!

  3. Don't worry about the title! I think that can come at any point and it's also changed a lot by publishers. I get distracted all the time so turning off the internet and setting small goals both help.

  4. I get distracted when real life gets in the way - job, study for my course and planning the wedding. Just lately there seem to be too many other things getting in the way! It's not I'm not motivated - I just don't have a moment free!!

  5. I saw the title of your post and almost freaked! I mean, I needs my pages...HA!

Distractions are so EASY, aren't they? I'm the worst when I've been super busy and then all of a sudden it all comes to a halt. For some reason, most sane people would find the extra time a great tool for writing, but me? I scan the internet for hours wondering what I missed while being busy! *sigh*

  6. oh man, my biggest distrction right now is query tracker. Querying one book, while writing another is CRAY CRAY! I'm always like, well let's go check to see if there's any more comment in QT on the agents i've queried. le sigh

  8. Sounds like I'm at the same place you are :) I'm only on chapter 8, but new shiny ideas are already trying to shove their way into my brain, and agent research is starting to look really exciting. I guess thats normal, but the key is to push through. Best of luck!

  10. New follower here, but... I feel your pain! :) I've got a finish MS working on the second/third draft as I keep going back to rework the beginning. I'm scattered. My brain likes to take unauthorized vactions on me and I find that facebook can be a culprit, esp if I get caught up in something people are commenting on a lot... and I'm like, "OOoo, look SQUIRREL!" when a new comment posts, I just have to read it. So I have to avoid fb most of the time. If its not FB then it's someething else, sometimes ANYTHING else. Sometimes I have to turn of my phone and my wireless and just use the writers acronym. BICHOK. Butt In Chair Hands On Keyboard. There's no other way around it.

  11. Ah... I knew my comment didn't take yesterday. Darn. It was really funny too. But... now I can't remember what I said, so I guess you'll have to take my word for it. :)
