It's not easy being green (with envy)

The publishing world is jam-packed with things to be jealous about.

Oh, they got an agent! How great
Translation: omg why don't i have an agent? oh yeah, i'm still on my first draft. i suck.

Oh, they sold their book to a publisher! I can't wait to read their book!
Translation: omg i'm so far from that. what am i doing? i suck!

Oh, that's such a pretty cover! It will look fab on my bookshelf!
Translation: omg they lucked out on that. there's no way my cover will end up that cool. i suck!

Oh, they're having a launch party! I can't wait to meet them!
Translation: omg am i ever going to have a launch party? i suck!!!

Oh, they got a movie deal! Can't wait for that to come out!
Translation: omg i suck so bad.

Seriously, it's exhausting being excited for everyone ahead of you, isn't it? It really is exciting to hear people are making their dream come true, but when you have the same dream, that little envy worm curls itself up inside your ear and tells you lies. It tells you that you can't make your dreams come true. That you'll never get an agent, you'll never sell your book, and even if you do you'll get a crap cover and no one will want it!

This new year presents a clean slate, envy free and full of possibilities! It's up to us to put in the work to make our dreams come true. Let's not waste our energy being jealous of everyone else. Let's channel that into making it happen for ourselves.

What are you going to make happen in 2012??

  1. wishing you all the luck in the publishing department this year, Kristin!

  2. Omg!! I seriously just LOL'ed really loudly while reading this because this is spot on for me. Love it. Wishing you a non-sucky, prosperous 2012. You can do it!!!!

  3. Yes. Exactly. (OMG she writes such great blog posts - I suck!!!) - just kidding ;) It's all about baby steps- and some people have just been taking them for longer than I have!

    Happy New Year

  4. "envy free and full of possibilities" -YES! Happy New Year!

  5. Love this post Kristin. Just love everything about it. :))) Your positive energy is infectious.

  6. Jade - right? I think it's spot on for all of us wether we like to admit it or not haha. Happy New Year!

Crystal - it's a good infection to spread! ;) Happy New Year!

  7. I hate those lies! And in answer to your question, I want to make authenticity happen for me--on my blog, in my life. I want to stock my Etsy shop full of heartfelt paintings. And I want to continue being creative by learning new things each month.

  8. I struggle with this daily. To the point where sometimes I have to close Twitter, push myself away from the computer, and scream. Seriously. It's hard being happy for others when you're so mad at them for reaching their goals. I try to tell myself that I'll get there, this industry is just SO SLOW. And you'll get there, too. <3

  9. so very true. Although I am happy for people who find success, there's that small part of me that thinks, 'you aren't going to get there'. Thank goodness I don't listen to it.

  10. I love how every one of you translations ends in "i suck." LOL.

I'm so with you on 2012 being full of posibilites and making things happen. I can't wait to see what this year brings! And I know it's going to be so much better than last year.

So last year can suck it! :)

  11. LOL! You nailed those.
    Here's another:
They are a best seller on Amazon - I'm so happy for them!
Translation: Why isn't my book selling like that? I suck.

  12. I'm so with you. It's tough sitting and being excited for everyone even when you're still wondering when it's going to happen for you. It's funny to also realize that even after one is published they still deal with all the nonsense. Thank goodness for support groups!

  13. I never feel jealous! (just kidding) Actually, my emotion is more like what you described here--this fear that I'll NEVER EVER make it and I'll watch EVERYONE else (and their puppies) succeeding while I'm stuck FOREVER at this one spot. When I start feeling that fear, I remind myself that I love writing and that's why I'm doing this crazy thing. It helps me get out of the pity-party mode and into WORK mode. :)

  14. I love this post. Tweeting it immediately.

  15. this is like a checklist for every writer...

  16. I never say any of those things!

*whistles while looking up to the sky*

  17. Umm. Yes. Sums up the life of being an aspiring author surrounded by other aspiring authors. While I love everyone and am happy for everyone and their good news, it's nice to know other people are secretly bitter and filled with "i suck" feelings too. =P This was a perfect summation. Love it. Good luck this year, get a move on!

  18. ...it's like you're in my head!
Ugh, i hear you loud and clear. Because you really ARE happy for them. You just want to be there too.
I'm going to query 2 MS this year and work on publishing more short stories. These are things that i can handle. Everything else is out of my hands

  19. So funny! I find myself repeating many of those things in my mind. Thanks for the cheering up, Kristin. I'm going to finish my two books this year and hopefully query successfully this time around.

  20. tell that worm to shut it.
    and get back to work!
but shhh... that worm whispers in everyone's ears. even the ones posting all that good news. really.
See you tomorrow when we'll write up a storm!

    Very nice blog.

Mark your calendar for a giveaway on my blog for THE WICKED WIVES by Gustine Pelagatti.

    January 6 through January 21.

Here is a review of the book on my blog:

Hope you can stop by for the giveaway.

  22. BAHAHA! Okay, this is really funny. But so true! I definitely feel the same way like, a LOT of the time! I'm pretty sure this is a constant mantra in my head when I think about my writing of, "Gosh, why are you SO SLOW?! You STILL haven't finished this first draft yet? You suck." ;)

  23. Oh I SO hear you. You really are happy for that person but at the same time you are SO jealous. Just today I started Divergent by Veronica Roth and it said this was her debut novel and she's a recent grad from college. OMG I suck- I'm 30 and I haven't published a novel yet. What was I doing when I recently graduated college? I had a stupid leasing agent job and was getting married (okay that second one was totally awesome ;p)...but still...I am the same way, Kristin!

  24. I have felt or thought all those translations. I have to squash them down and remind myself that we all have different publishing journeys.

I hope your writing dreams come true in 2012.

  25. HAHAHAHA!!!! That is so funny. Yeah... I'm quickly learning that this whole "pursuit of publishing" is a lot like high school... You can't compare yourself to other people, just focus on doing what you need to to get through it.

Which is basically another way of saying, I suck so much.
    Bahahaha oh, nailed it.

  26. I really dislike that nasty little feeling that wriggles its way in after all the excitement fades away.

We will get there! But if you get there first, I'll try not to be too envious. :)

Happy New Year! Cheers to making it happen for ourselves!
